Oryx is The Joint Commission’s (TJC) performance measurement and improvement initiative, which integrates outcomes and other performance measure data into the accreditation process. The name “oryx” was chosen as it is a swiftly moving and graceful gazelle‐like animal.
The needed performance measures are based on the health systems size and services provided (e.g., maternity care, psychiatric, pediatric services, short term nursing facility). The performance measures cover a variety of metrics, such as ED arrival to departure times, influenza immunization rates, and rates of VTE prophylaxis.
For perinatal care, TJC assesses four core measures in perinatal care, created based on
recommendations of national organizations (ACOG, March of Dimes, CDC, and others). Currently, the following performance measures are used for the Joint Commission accreditation process:
PC‐01 – Elective Delivery
PC‐02 – Cesarean Section
PC‐05 – Exclusive Breast Feeding
PC‐06 – Unexpected Complications in Term Newborns
