The NPIC1 is an organization dedicated to perinatal data aggregation and analysis. Data is contributed by member health organizations (all voluntary participants, so there are inherent biases in the data). The database includes over 16 million inpatient perinatal discharges, collected since 1985. More than 685,000 are added annually. It is one of the largest multi-state perinatal discharge databases available for research and benchmarking analyses.1 NPIC produces quarterly reports of perinatal outcomes comparisons between member hospitals (anonymized). Member health care systems can also request more specific reports and analyses. Additionally, NPIC provides a number of dashboards that summarize key perinatal metrics to help focus areas for improvement.
Benefits for participating health care systems/hospitals include data collection and summarization, as well as regular comparisons of the member’s performance with national benchmarks and peer hospitals.
Samples of the Quarterly Reports and other materials are available at the website.
